Happy 2012 everyone !!!!!
Hope your holidays were enjoyable and safe . Our kids Christmas party was a great success , as was New Years Eve . If you missed either of these , well , as I've said in the past , then you missed out . Maybe next year , eh ? Both were great parties and we are appreciative of all the compliments received , but , bottom line , we are just plain glad everyone enjoyed themselves in our Lodge . What a great crew we had ! The Lodge is hugely appreciative of all the volunteers who made these things happen . We surely couldn’t have done it without you !!!
Hope you are enjoying our new Golf game we had installed in December , and experiencing the excitement of whats under that next pull tab !
I have started compiling the list of people who will be asked to serve on the Lodge Nominating Committee , which will be effective at the end of February . This Committee wil have three meetings to determine who goes on the ballot for the Lodge Officers Election on the second Wednesday in April . I mention this not only to keep you informed , but to transition into a few reflections as I near the end of my two year run as your Governor .
I am , as I just stated , YOUR Governor . That means I serve the membership in its entirety , and as objective as I try to be , I am , after all , not without my own convictions . Self-serving agendas have no place in our Lodge . My one and only agenda , as well as the rest of the Board , has been to better the Lodge and make it a place for you to relax , have a few "pops " , and enjoy yourself . Sure , we have standards and rules moreso than public establishments , but we are not public , and the end result is our trying to create an environment where everyone has that sort of " at home " feeling . My rose-colored glasses left me long ago , I know we are not without our troubles . We deal case by case , and live or die with decisions we make as a board , but know this , we do things as a BOARD . We have this lil green book called the “ General Laws “ which we have to live by . We wear two hats in this regard , because the Board of Officers is the House Committee , which deals in operations and finances as well as sensitive areas . All matters of this Committee are confidential . We get questions that encroach on this area from time to time , and answer them as best we can without breaking that confidentiality . Please understand we are not dodging anything here , but we are “handcuffed “ at times depending on the nature of the question . The other hat ( and meeting we have ) is the Officers meeting where we deal with all other aspects of the Lodge ( up-coming events , bands , etc. ) . The third meeting is the General Membership , conducted on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month . This is where you may address ideas or concerns . It is NOT a gripe session . Concerns should be conveyed in a calm , logical manner and should be addressed to the “ Chair “ (The Presiding Officer , usually the Governor ) . We may not be able to give you an answer on the spot , but the Board will discuss any concern . Our attendance at the General Membership has been very poor , it is your choice and opportunity . As always , you don’t have to wait for a meeting to express ideas or concerns . We are always available in the Social Quarters . Our financial status : We are, very simply , O.K. In all honestly , we don’t have the bank account we had when times were much better , but thanks to those of you who do patronize us , keno , our own cost consciousness , and our successful events , we ARE paying our bills . Since the decline of the economy beginning roughly in 2007 , EVERYBODY is feeling the pinch . We are always looking for areas we can save in , so we can maintain our low prices . For this , we need your help . We need you to support your lodge . We are constantly evaluating , re-evaluating , and adjusting to the tough economic times we are living in . How many stories are you hearing about Lodges being forced to close their doors ? It spawns rumors about us , pay no attention to them , we remain solvent and will continue to diligently work to stay that way . One last thing and I’ll be finished boring the life out of you . VOLUNTEERS : we are burning up the ones we have , they can’t do it all . We never have enough . We particularly need people ( and crews ) to do a special and a soup for Friday night dinners . We always need people to staff any functions , fix things that break , change a light bulb , or a multitude of things that need doing around the Lodge . We have made this plea many times , and have not received much of a response . We are a self-help club , and , I might add , one of the nicest you’ll ever set foot in . I mean that in terms of esthetics AND people . I have probably been long-winded enough here , but these are things we continually get questions on and hopefully this will clear up some of the “gray areas “ . Always feel free to tug on my sleeve ( one at a time please ) , if you have a question .
Hope to see you around the Lodge ,
Bill

From the Desk of the Administrator:
Let me start off with the state of our lodge’s finances. In my last letter there were questions and rumors whether our lodge was even going to survive this terrible economic time. Well’ I’m happy to say to the naysayers that our lodge is in much better shape then we’ve been in the last couple of years. All of our utilities, insurances, taxes, and payroll liabilities (F.I.C.A., state and federal withholding, state and federal unemployment liabilities) and sales taxes are paid and current. Our rainy day fund is slowly improving, but it’s getting better.
You probably didn’t know our lodge is the third largest lodge in the state but we are number one for family activities to offer our members. Some of the things you can do in the lodge are a Dart league on Tuesday nights, men’s pool league on Wednesday, euchre tournaments every Tuesday night and Saturday afternoons, shuffle board on Sunday’s at 3pm (all level of players invited) Wednesday afternoon is seniors day with free pool and lunch specials with homemade soups, and free line dancing lessons. Friday nights is karaoke night and Saturdays is always live entertainment with a variety of bands from around town and a great dance floor for dancing. Thursday is family night with variety of food specials. We even have Club Keno and offer all the lottery tickets and lottery games you can play and purchase in your lodge. Just recently we required the license and now have pull tabs to also enjoy and play. Mondays is free pool all day and I can’t forget to mention our Friday night dinners with steaks, Walleye, Perch, Cod, and a Varity of specials with soup and salad bar which is free and included with every dinner with the best prices in town. To get all the latest and up to date information and activities our lodge has to offer visit our Web site at www.scsmoose.com. In closing I want to mention this current board of officers is probably one of the best and hardest working boards our lodge has every had, working together to improve the activities and finances of our lodge. Well, with all that said see you in the lodge.

Why Do We Ask You To Show Your Membership Card?
Because doing so maintains our rights as a private organization - and can, quite literally, save You’re Lodge (and you) from financial ruin. I have walked into several Moose Lodges during my years as a member - and everytime, I have Been proud to reach into my wallet as I entered, to fulfill the requirement of displaying my Moose Membership card. I have always thought of this small-plasticized card as saying several things about me - And about any other man or woman who carries one: It says that the holder is a fraternalist, a friendly person who enjoys the company of others – and Who stands ready to help a fellow human being in need whenever he or she can. It says that the holder is someone who holds a special place in his or her heart for children. Through his or her Moose membership, he is doing something real and tangible to provide hope and a better life for youngsters in need, at Mooseheart Child City and School in Illinois. Showing a Moose membership cards says all those positive things about a person, I Know very well that the fraternity’s requirement that a membership card be shown every time a member Enters a Lodge, or makes a purchase, has for years been a big point of irritation among thousands of Moose men and women across North America.
